Hemitonic Music is based on Steve Reich’s Clapping Music. I have always loved the music of Steve Reich for its simple-complexity. In many of Reich’s compositions he sets up a simple rhythmic and harmonic framework with one or more tightly controlled variable such as tempo or dynamics. Reich changes these variables over time creating a shifting kaleidoscope of rhythm and harmony. I created this adaptation of Clapping Music for for people who want to experience the piece on a pitched instrument. Each repeated bar can be played as many times as the performer desires.
